1. Verbal Chanting (Vaikhari Japa)
Vaikhari refers to the most outward form of speech. In this method, the Swami Samarth mantra is chanted aloud so that it can be heard by the practitioner and those nearby.
- How to practice: Sit in a comfortable position and pronounce each syllable of "Shri Swami Samarth" clearly. Focus on the vibration of the sound.
- Best for Beginners: If your mind is constantly distracted by wandering thoughts, Vaikhari is the best starting point. The physical sound acts as an anchor for your attention.
- When to use: During morning Aarti, group prayers, or when you feel emotionally overwhelmed and need to hear the Guru’s name.
2. Whispering (Upanshu Japa)
Upanshu is a more subtle form of chanting. Here, the mantra is whispered, or the lips and tongue move without producing a loud sound. Only the practitioner can hear the faint humming of the mantra.
- The Science: Ancient texts suggest that Upanshu Japa is 100 times more powerful than Vaikhari because it requires a higher level of internal focus.
- How to practice: Close your eyes and move your lips as if speaking, but keep the volume at a bare whisper.
- Best for Privacy: This is the ideal method for chanting while traveling, in a workplace, or in public spaces where you wish to maintain your spiritual connection privately.
3. Mental Chanting (Manasik Japa)
Manasik Japa is the most advanced and powerful form of chanting. There is no movement of the lips, tongue, or vocal cords. The mantra is repeated entirely within the mind.
- The Power of Silence: Manasik Japa is considered 1,000 times more effective than other methods. It turns the mind itself into a temple.
- How to practice: Visualize the form of Shri Swami Samarth of Akkalkot while "hearing" the mantra vibrate in your mind.
- Best for Deep Meditation: This method is used to reach deep states of Dhyana (meditation). It allows you to stay in a constant state of "Swami-consciousness" even while performing other tasks.
Swami’s Assurance: The Heart of the Mantra
Regardless of the method you choose, the most important element is Bhav (devotion). Whether you shout his name to the heavens or whisper it in the silence of your heart, Maharaj is always listening. The purpose of these three methods is to eventually reach a stage where the mantra continues automatically with every breath. As you begin your Japa today, remember his promise: "Bhiu Nakos, Mi Tuzya Pathishi Aahe" (Do not fear, I am behind you).
