According to the Bhavishya Purana, this story was narrated by Lord Krishna to King Yudhishthira during the Mahabharata era to explain how to overcome immense hardships and regain lost power.
Long ago, there was a powerful and righteous king named Mahijit who ruled over the prosperous kingdom of Mahishmati.
The king was deeply loved by his subjects, but he was profoundly unhappy because he had no children to inherit his throne and carry on his lineage.
He feared that without an heir, his ancestors would not receive proper rituals in the afterlife.
Desperate for a solution, the king called a council of his wisest ministers, sages, and citizens.
He pleaded with them, "I have never sinned, never seized wealth unjustly, and always protected my people like my own children.
Why am I cursed with childlessness?" The concerned ministers went into the deep forests to find a solution.
There, they met the ancient and enlightened Sage Lomasha, who possessed the vision of the past, present, and future.
The Past Life Karma
Sage Lomasha closed his eyes, meditated, and saw the reason for King Mahijit's suffering.
He revealed to the ministers : "In his previous life, King Mahijit was a poor merchant.
On the day of Ashadha Krishna Chaturthi, he was travelling through a forest, weak with intense thirst and heat.
He finally found a water pond.
Just as he was about to drink, a thirsty cow and her newborn calf arrived at the water's edge.
Driven by desperate thirst, the merchant ruthlessly chased the cow and calf away so he could drink first.
Because he denied water to a thirsty mother and child on this auspicious day, he is suffering from childlessness in this life."

The ministers begged Sage Lomasha for a remedy to break the curse.
The sage advised : "To wash away this sin, the king, his queens, and all of you must observe the Krishna Pingala Sankashti Chaturthi fast in the month of Ashadha.

"The ministers returned to the palace and narrated everything to King Mahijit.
